Afghanistan: Cultural Heritage and the Forever War

Thursday, May 6
12:00 pm (EDT)
A Heritage Now Event

Just a few months after the Taliban destroyed the colossal Buddha statues of Bamyan Valley in Afghanistan, the tragic events of 9/11 set in motion a slew of policy changes in the U.S. and sparked a devastating conflict in the Middle East.

Join us on Thursday, May 6 at 12:00 pm (EDT) for WMF's annual Paul Mellon Lecture discussing cultural heritage in Afghanistan 20 years after 9/11. In light of President Biden’s plans to withdraw all U.S. troops from Afghanistan by September 11, 2021, the conversation will consider the impact a new political equilibrium may have on heritage preservation in the country.
